Behind the Scenes at a Seafood Restaurant

My favorite restaurant besides my mom’s kitchen is Haddad’s Ocean Cafe. Haddad’s is a local restaurant in Brant Rock, Massachusetts.  Over the past few years, my family has gotten to be good friends with one of the owners, Chuck.  Chuck is really nice and everyone likes him because he comes out to talk to all of the customers while they’re eating.  He also let me take you on a tour through the kitchen!  So enjoy! 🙂

Here’s an interview I did with Chuck Haddad:

What’s your most popular menu item?

Broiled Haddock

What’s your personal favorite menu item?

Seafood Casserole

How many pounds of lobster do you go through a day?

120 lbs

What’s the busiest day of the week?

Saturday

What’s the best thing about owning a seafood restaurant?

The people

When did Haddad’s open?

1937

How is it different today then it was back then?

More modern

How will it be different when the new restaurant opens?

Bigger, out of flood zone, new menu items, a function room, and a huge kitchen

Your clam chowder is the best I’ve ever had (and I’ve tried many). What’s your secret? And will you share the recipe???.

The recipe= what people like- a lot of butter.  (You can never have too much buttah!)

Was at your establishment this week and was very disappointed. I found the prices quite a bit higher than the "old restaurant " and the quantity of food (especially the amout of lobster in the casseroles and the quantity of steamers In an order) a lot less. I did have the fried clams last week and found only 3 clams with bellies which was very disappointing. What happened? The new restaurant is just beautiful but I don't know if can revisit as much as I used to. I will say that all the staff members are wonderful and courteous. I hope some of these kinks can be worked out because I have always been satisfied in the past and have been patronizing your restaurant for 40 plus years.

Well, it's actually not my restaurant- I just interviewed the owner. I haven't been to the new Haddad's yet.

This is a must do item on my list next time I am in Mass.

Is Haddad Lebanese originally? It's such a common Lebanese last name, it would be interesting to know. I had the best fish ever in Lebanon, so maybe its in thier blood :)

My favorite at Haddads is the lobster especially when they crack it up for me so I can get to it faster, pour on the butter and dig in. Super interview! What a great idea, Recipeboy. Keep up the good work and save the leftovers for me!
