Jack O Lantern Sloppy Joe Pie

Halloween is just around the corner, so we decided to make a really festive Jack O Lantern Sloppy Joe Pie for dinner.

Sloppy Joes were supposedly invented by Sloppy Joe’s Bar in Key West, Florida. We’ve shared a recipe for Pizza Sloppy Joes here on RecipeBoy, and that’s become a very popular and kid-friendly dinner recipe. And we frequently make Classic Sloppy Joes too. But this Jack O Lantern Sloppy Joe Pie is just plain fun to make, and kids always love it!

RecipeBoy shared this recipe back in 2011 (I saved a photo of him with the pie, and you can see it at the end of this post below the recipe). We’ve re-shot the photos and re-shared the recipe in 2022.

How to make Jack O Lantern Sloppy Joe Pie:

The complete, printable recipe is at the end of this post.

Preheat your oven to 450 degrees F. Unroll the pie crust onto an ungreased cookie sheet. With a sharp knife, cut a jack o’ lantern face from the crust. Use some of the scraps to attach a stem to the top. Cutting the pie crust is the best part of all by far because you get to carve any design you want. Let the kids do this part! Bake 9 minutes, or until the crust is light golden brown

Meanwhile, in a 10 or 11-inch nonstick skillet, cook the turkey and onion over medium-high heat for 8 to 10 minutes, stirring often until the turkey is no longer pink. Stir in the corn, salsa, chili sauce, brown sugar and chiles. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce heat to medium-low. Simmer for 8 to 10 minutes, stirring once in a while, until everything is cooked through. Stir in the cilantro.

Carefully place the baked jack o’ lantern crust on top of the turkey mixture in the skillet and serve!

That’s what you call a Sloppy Joe! It’s ground turkey with sauce and a whole bunch of good stuff.

Spoon out individual servings, and then break off a piece of the Jack O Lantern pie crust to serve with your sloppy joe mix. We like to add a little sour cream, which makes it all rather yummy. Enjoy!
