Have any of you guys ever tried an Orange Julius from Dairy Queen? The first one I ever had was at the Dairy Queen/ Orange Julius in Lincoln Square, Chicago 2 years ago. It rocked my world and inspired me to make my own. So here I am 2 years later, sipping an icy fresh homemade Orange Julius on a hot summer day. I enjoyed it a lot, so I hope you will too.

Ingredients needed for Orange Julius:

  • Orange Juice Concentrate: this is the frozen can that you can find in the frozen fruit/ juice section of your market
  • milk
  • water
  • sugar
  • vanilla

Years ago, there were egg yolks in the original Orange Julius recipe. The company has adapted the recipe over the years to leave out the egg yolks. They’re not necessary because this recipe is nice and frothy and good without them!

How to make an Orange Julius:

It couldn’t be any easier!  You just put the ingredients in the blender and turn it on. You’ll end up with a perfect, frothy, orange drink that will remind you of the original that you probably once tried at Dairy Queen.

Got Orange Julius?

I love this picture because it goes with the Got Milk? ads. I LOVE seeing who the new Got Milk? stars are. I’ve seen everyone from SuperMan to David Beckham. I hope I can get those guys to do a Got Orange Julius? picture. That would be SOOOOO cool. Maybe I should be in a Got Milk? ad one day. I LOVE milk and my dad is always growling at me to wipe off my milk mustache (or in this case, my OJ mustache)!

This drink is so good that I drained this cup in what would have probably been world record time if I had a stopwatch. I hope Dairy Queen knows I’m out here because they have some competition!

And even a kid can show you how to make an Orange Julius so good that it poses a threat to Dairy Queen’s business… Like Me!

  1. I’ve never actually had an Orange Julius from Orange Julius, but have been making them for years (with a recipe similar to yours) and they really are THE BEST! My two kids (4 & 5) and I LOVE LOVE LOVE smoothies of all sorts, but I throw in an Orange Julius here and there 🙂 sometimes adding frozen strawberries or pineapple!

  2. These bring back so many memories from when I was growing up! My friends and I would beg our moms to make it for us!! Your recipe sounds great! Another great post!!

  5. As a kid my mom would often treat me to an Orange Julius from the local mall…this brings back good memories!!! Thank you so much for sharing!! 🙂

  6. I go a little simpler with my version….just vanilla ice cream (or frozen yogurt) and orange juice! No need having extra ingredients & you just vary you ice cream to juice ratio depending on how thick or thin you want it.
    That’s it & it’s the best! 🙂

  7. I tryed this, but the only orange juice we had was with extra pulp, so i pulled out some Sunny D and it worked just as well 🙂

  8. Hi,

I found your blog when I googled for an orange Julius recipe and I have a question about the straw in your pictures. Did it work well with the drink?? We are throwing a baby shower and want to make this drink and use the same cute paper straws but aren’t sure they will be big enough to suck the drink through. It looks like it worked find for you??

    Thanks!!

  9. LOVE your recipe 🙂 I had leftover oranges and blended them to a pulp and wasn’t sure what to do with them, since they would be so thick when blended. It wasn’t much for orange juice….then I found your recipe! It tastes great and a wonderful way to use oranges that may be on the verge of being thrown out.

Thanks so much for posting 🙂

  10. Oranges were on sale and about to get soft.
So we sliced and peeled them and put them in the freezer. Once frozen, we blended them in place of the ice cubes and juice concentrate in your recipe – delicious! 😀
Thank you for the recipe for an old favorite drink!

  11. You could probably substitute the water and orange concentrate with 1.5 cups of orange juice. Can’t wait to make this!!!

  12. Growing up I wasn’t a fan of breakfast so momma would make me a ponche, either with orange or pineapple juice, milk, sugar, ice and an egg. she would blended till creamy along with a slice of toast. She slid that egg in without me knowing. I know that poeople are afriad of using raw eggs, but the original Orange Julius would crack an egg their drinks, at least thats what they did in the Buena Park mall stand in the 1960’s. Might be mom was the original Orange Julius maker and didn’t know it, either way it’s the best!!!

  13. My mom used to make them for me all of the time when I was younger. She would freeze it in small cups and I would eat it for breakfast. So yummy!!

  14. Why not just use regular orange juice poured over a few scoops of vanilla ice cream (amount is up to you) and stir well the way you make a root beer float. Sugar and vanilla optional.

  15. When I was a boy, every Mall had its Orange Julius kiosk. Then they pretty much disappeared. Now Dairy Queen has bought the rights and they are back! It’s one of the most refreshing drinks available for a hot summer day. A raw egg blended with it added a nice frothy texture, but you would have to ask for the egg. Today that would be a real no-no, but then we didn’t know any better.

  16. Love your blog – impressive. Curious – is there a particular reason you thaw the orange concentrate first? Thanks, and do keep on keepin’ on 🙂

  17. I am 68 yrs young and I remember drinking these many yrs ago in Calif. when I was growing up. Awhile back I saw a sign for them at Dq in Vidor tx, I could not believe my eyes. Needless to say not all Dqs have them yet in this area, but now that I can make them myself, I will be able to survive. Thanks..These and Del Taco green sauce make my days and remind me of he in Calif..

  18. Orange Julius is the best. I am caring for my 99 year old Great Aunt and I make these for her. Mine are packed with calories as well as good taste. I use OJ and add vanilla ice cream, whole cream, vanilla protein powder, and then a packet of Emergen-C Super Orange or Tangerine. This is one of my ways to keep her healthy and keep weight on her.

  19. so good i had my first orange julius for the first time a few weeks ago on vacation we dont have orange julius on kauai so i just had to look up a recipe made it every day since i read this. TY!!!!

  20. Have I had an orange julius you ask? Not only have I had one, I used to drink them long ago when there were stand alone Orange Julius stores in the mall.

  21. Didn’t Orange Julius use a raw eggs in theirs? Maybe to make it super frothy? I think I would rather do your recipe.

Thanks! Can’t wait to share with my kids!!

  22. Having an orange Julius at the mall when I was a kid was one of the best things ever! Your recipe is spot on. The only thing I changed is I used 4 whole oranges instead of concentrate (because I remember them using fresh oranges back in the day). Also I used the Nutri Bullet.
    Perfection!

  23. First of all- all these people with there lame suggestions and questions to this recipe have me shaking my head. I mean, really? Sunny D as an OJ substitute? Oh brother… Ice Cream and Orange Juice- get out of here! true Julius perfection doesn’t come that stupidly easy.

THIS RECIPE you put here is just ridiculously spot-on and perfect though. I just picked up the ingredients and blended me a Julius last night & my head nearly hit the roof after my first sip because it sooooo legitimately tastes just like the real thing with absolutely no deviation in flavor! Seriously can’t thank you enough, I will never have to wait in line at DQ again (=
